BIS cracks down on Chembur shop selling aluminium foil without BIS standard mark

A recent enforcement raid by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) in Mumbai has shed light on the critical importance of adhering to quality standards in the packaging industry. During the operation, M/s New Ryan Plastic in Chembur was found storing and selling aluminium foil and aluminium alloy bare foil for food packaging without the mandatory BIS standard mark, signalling a breach of regulatory protocols.

On Thursday, May 2nd, 2024, BIS officials from the Mumbai Branch-I team conducted an enforcement raid at M/s New Ryan Plastic, situated on Lokhande Marg in Chembur. The inspection revealed a significant inventory of aluminium foils and their packaging devoid of the requisite BIS standard mark. This discovery led to the invocation of Section 17(1)(a) of the BIS Act 2016, indicating a violation of the Aluminium Foil (Quality Control) Order, 2020.

Under Section 17(1)(a) of the BIS Act 2016, the firm faces severe consequences for its non-compliance. Offenders may be subject to imprisonment for up to two years or fined a minimum of INR 2,00,000, or both. Legal action is underway, as the BIS intends to pursue the matter through the judicial system to ensure accountability.

To empower consumers to make informed choices, BIS advocates the use of the BIS CARE App, available on both Android and iOS platforms. This app provides access to a list of mandatory products requiring BIS certification. Additionally, consumers are encouraged to verify the authenticity of the ISI Mark on products before purchase, utilising resources such as the BIS website. Vigilance from citizens is crucial, and any instances of non-compliance or misuse of the ISI Mark should be promptly reported to the BIS Office.
