ACTEGA, a global company specialising in the development and production of coatings, inks, adhesives, sealants, and compounds for the printing and packaging industry, has recently launched a breakthrough solution for the coffee capsule market. The new ACTEseal® heatseal coatings for the internal coating of aluminium coffee capsules are PVC-free, providing improved recyclability and reducing environmental damage associated with PVC-containing coatings.
As the demand for convenience continues to increase, coffee capsules have become a popular solution for coffee drinkers. Aluminium coffee capsules, in particular, have gained widespread popularity as they provide excellent protection against external factors such as oxygen, light, and moisture, ensuring the preservation of coffee aroma for a longer period.
However, with the global production of 27 billion aluminium coffee capsules in 2022, the environmental impact of these convenient portions will reflect the central dilemma of the decade. The need for sustainable production processes and recycling of end products is crucial to address this issue.
The vice president of sales for flexible packaging EMEA at ACTEGA, Stefan Brandhoff, declared: “After several years of research and development, we are proud to introduce our new PVC-free heatseal coatings. We firmly believe that our solution will not only become the industry standard but also set the bar for responsible packaging.”
The use of PVC-containing coatings in aluminium coffee capsules poses a challenge for recyclers as incineration of the halogen-containing coating produces substances that can have adverse environmental impacts. The new ACTEseal® heatseal coatings alleviate this issue and increase the use of circular materials in packaging. The solution meets FDA and EU regulations for food contact materials, ensuring safety for consumers.
Apart from their sustainability benefits, ACTEseal® heatseal coatings also provide excellent sealing seam strength, high burst pressure in the stress test, and flexibility and formability, making them an ideal solution for the coffee capsule industry.
The senior vice president of flexible packaging at ACTEGA, Thomas Sawitowski, implied: “Innovations in sustainable packaging are developing at an impressive pace, and ACTEGA is paving the way for future solutions. With the successful launch of our new PVC-free coating systems, we offer a promising step forward for the coffee capsule industry and brands seeking to meet growing consumer demands for environmentally sustainable packaging.”
In addition to heatseal coatings for internal coating, ACTEGA offers a broad portfolio of primers, base coats, and print and overprint varnishes for the exterior of coffee capsules. The innovative solution by ACTEGA is a significant step towards sustainable and environmentally friendly coffee pod packaging, reducing the environmental impact while providing excellent product quality.
