According to the latest market report by Technavio, one of the top four emerging trends driving the global automotive heated seats market is advanced aluminium extrusion technology for heating seats. The other three trends observed are:
• Development of climate control seats
• Adoption of heated seats in low cost electric car and electric bus segment
• Rising adoption of heated seats in motorcycle segment
“Heated seats are a preferred device by OEMs in four-wheeler vehicles. It improves seat comfort for the rider when traveling long distances, by retaining warmth which helps to minimize strain and back pain. Such attributes make such vehicles more viable for touring purposes, especially over long distances. Hence, they are widely adopted in North America and China, where luxury car penetration is high and rising significantly,” said Siddharth Jaiswal, a lead analyst from Technavio, specializing in automotive electronics sector research.
Aluminium has long replaced stainless steel as the main material for manufacturing various automotive component parts, both internal as well as external. The main advantage of aluminium over stainless steel or for that matter any other conventional material is the weight. Aluminium is essentially lighter than other metals used in vehicles, which makes it ideal for weight reduction processes. The increasing use of aluminium in seat design has led to significant reduction in weight of the automotive seats to make them suitable for electric drivertrain vehicles.

Other than weight advantage, aluminium also has excellent bonding with polymers, because of which it has been successful in replacing copper in the heating systems. The use of aluminium in heating systems help increase the performance of the automotive heated seats while extending the overall product life. Also, the reduced size and weight make heated seats an ideal fitment for modern electric vehicles.
