Hellenic Cables S.A., one of Europe's major cable makers with a significant presence in renewable energy transmission and distribution, received low-carbon EcoLum™ aluminium from Alcoa Corporation. The EcoLum brand is part of Alcoa's Sustana™ family of low-carbon goods and has a carbon footprint of around 3.5 times lower than the industry average.
The announcement was made public on June 6. The initiative was carried out to help the firm achieve its aim of a sustainable energy future. Hellenic Cables runs five production units in three countries and is a producer of power, communications, submarine cables and compounds.
“We are very proud to partner with Hellenic Cables and assist them in their stated mission to develop a sustainable energy future. We know that aluminum is a key material for a more sustainable future, and we are the company to deliver with responsible production from mine to metal, all backed by excellent quality and strong customer service,” said Kelly Thomas, Alcoa’s Executive Vice President and Chief Commercial Officer.
EcoLum aluminium, which is made in hydroelectric-powered aluminium smelters, emits around 4 tonnes of CO2e per tonne of metal produced, including both direct and indirect emissions (scope 1 and scope 2) throughout the production chain, which includes bauxite mining and alumina refining.
EcoLum is made at smelters that run mostly on renewable energy. Renewable energy now powers more than 80 per cent of Alcoa's global smelting operations. Alcoa has a technological roadmap that intends to reimagine the aluminium sector for a sustainable future and support its net-zero 2050 target, in addition to its low-carbon products.
“Hellenic Cables is committed not only to reducing its own operational emissions, but to also drive decarbonization activities across the entire business’ areas of influence. Alcoa is a key enabler that contributes efficiently in this direction. We prioritize the urgency of deep and immediate mitigation actions, hence EcoLum minimizes our environmental impacts and enhances the value of our products,” said Alexis Alexiou, CEO of Cenergy Holdings and Hellenic Cables.
In terms of conductivity, mechanical characteristics, and durability, aluminium is a great substitute for copper. Customers of Hellenic Cables will be able to reduce their own scope 3 emissions by purchasing high-quality cable products with a much smaller carbon footprint by utilising low-carbon EcoLum aluminium.
Alcoa's Sustana aluminium products are expecting a more than three-fold yearly rise in their order book through 2022. Sustana's EcoLum aluminium is joined by EcoDura™ aluminium, which has at least 50 per cent recycled material, and EcoSource™, the world's only low-carbon, smelter grade alumina brand.
