Aldi is shaking things up in the wine aisle with the launch of its very first own-label aluminium wine bottle in the UK, making a bold move away from traditional glass. The new packaging will hit shelves on April 14, 2025, marking a big step forward in the supermarket’s sustainability journey.

The aluminium metal is lightweight, fully recyclable and more durable than glass, not to mention it chills quicker, making it both eco-friendly and convenient. Aldi’s debut wine in this format is the Costellore Pinot Grigio, a light and refreshing Italian white, bottled in the UK in partnership with Broadland Drinks.
The 75cl aluminium bottle weighs nearly 75% less than a glass bottle and comes in at an affordable £5.99. According to Aldi, this new format supports their wider sustainability goals and brings a fresh twist to their own-label wine offering.
Catherine Smith, Commercial Director at Broadland Drinks, shared her thoughts:
“This initiative fits perfectly with our ambition to reduce our own carbon footprint and work with our retailers to make their businesses more sustainable.
We know the biggest factor in a bottle of wine’s carbon footprint is the bottle itself, so by switching from glass to aluminium, we can help meet the rising demand for alternative lower-carbon formats.”
However, Aldi isn’t the first UK supermarket to dip its toes into aluminium wine packaging. Waitrose moved its smaller wine range into aluminium cans back in 2023 and Tesco recently rolled out aluminium bottles from challenger brand Vinca in 300 of its stores.
Still, this latest move from Aldi is a major milestone in mainstream sustainable packaging and might just be the start of a new trend in wine shopping.
