Aluar expands renewable energy park in Puerto Madryn with 336MW project

The sole primary aluminium producer in Argentina and one of the largest in South America, Aluar Aluminio Argentino has commenced construction on a significant 336MW expansion of its renewable energy park in Puerto Madryn, located in Chubut province, as reported by BNamericas. The project, valued at US$400 million, is set to include 56 Goldwind turbines, boosting the park's overall capacity to 582MW.

This ambitious expansion is part of Aluar's ongoing commitment to sustainability and reducing the carbon footprint of its aluminium production.

The additional energy generated by the expansion, known as Stage V, will be essential for powering Aluar's 460,000 tonnes per year primary aluminium smelter, which has substantial energy demands. This development follows the recent completion of Stage IV, which added 81MW to the park, bringing its capacity to 246MW.

According to an environmental impact study by Terramoena, the Stage V expansion will also include constructing a 35-kilometer power line and other necessary infrastructure.

"This new expansion responds to the need to have new alternatives of generating power in the region that do not affect the environment and displace the use of non-renewable resources," the study notes.

Looking ahead, Aluar is also considering a Stage VI expansion, which would add 198MW to the park through 33 additional Goldwind turbines. Furthermore, the company has filed documents to develop a 50MW solar park, highlighting its dedication to diversifying its renewable energy portfolio.
