Alumex PLC, a subsidiary of Hayleys Group and a market leader in fully integrated aluminium manufacturing in Sri Lanka, announced the ground-breaking debut of low-carbon aluminium called 'Ozon'. The announcement comes immediately after the successful Phase 1 inauguration of the manufacturer's new state-of-the-art melting plant at Sapugaskanda to promote export markets. The second capacity-building phase will be carried out with an investment of over Rs. 1 billion.
{alcircleadd}“Today Alumex takes a significant step on its sustainability roadmap. We formally commissioned the low-carbon aluminium plant in Sapugaskanda and launched Ozon. Alumex has already developed world-class capabilities in product design and manufacture in compliance with global aluminium quality specifications. Over the past two years, this has led to encouraging export volume growth. We decided to invest over 1 billion rupees to set up this low carbon plant in line with Haylies Life code,” said Mohan Pandithage, Hayleys Chairman and Chief Executive.
The material is anticipated to give the Sri Lankan construction sector new life in its attempts to sustainably lower its environmental and carbon impact, according to Pramuk Dediwela. With its recently introduced brand for its raw material, "Ozon," the exporter will continue to uphold its dedication to the highest levels of international excellence.
“Aluminum is a material with infinite possibilities and a near limitless lifecycle. When processed correctly, it can be used, melted down, and reshaped with near zero loss in quality and physical integrity. Our new facility supports our efforts to enable greater circularity, drastically reduce our environmental impact and energy dependence, and deliver the highest quality products in South Asia to both local and global markets,” said Pramuk Dediwela, Managing Director of Alumex PLC.
The new facility, which incorporates cutting-edge and ecologically friendly technology, enables Alumex to make aluminium billets of the finest quality while using just 5 per cent of the total energy to produce primary aluminium from bauxite. It is anticipated that additional automation-driven optimisations would reduce energy use by up to 20 per cent.
Due to the significant demand for Ozon billets among foreign consumers, particularly in the USA, UK, Europe, and Australia markets, Low Carbon Aluminium helps to improve export earnings for the nation.
As part of the Hayleys Life code, Aluminum has adjusted its strategic priorities to emphasise export development through sustainability, which requires all Hayleys Group companies to align their operations around the concept of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG).
Most recently, Alumex developed a project to collect used aluminium beverage cans (UBCs) as part of its drive to care for the environment. Alumex already uses recycled metal for 50 per cent of its raw material requirements. An average of up to 8 kg of bauxite, 4 kilogrammes of chemical products, and 14 kWh of power are thought to be saved by recycling 1 kg of UBCs.
