In a momentous celebration of a 150-year partnership between Rio Tinto and the Indian government, India's Post Office has issued a new 5 rupee stamp titled 'Rio Tinto 150.' This commemorative stamp, part of the 'My Stamp' series, signifies the enduring collaboration between the Anglo-Australian mining giant and India, recognising Rio Tinto's significant contributions to the nation's development.

Rio Tinto's role in shaping the Indian aluminium industry has been pivotal, establishing a foundation that has not only fuelled industrial growth but has also left an indelible mark on various sectors. The stamp underscores Rio Tinto's commitment to innovation, sustainability, and continuous improvement in producing essential minerals and metals integral to daily life.

Relationship between Rio Tinto and the Indian aluminium industry 

The 'Make in India' initiative, championed by Rio Tinto, further highlights the company's dedication to fostering local manufacturing. Rio Tinto's engagement goes beyond just supplying raw materials; it actively supports initiatives that prioritise partnerships for a low-carbon transition, aligning with the global call for sustainable practices.

The special cover accompanying the stamp encapsulates Rio Tinto's diverse contributions to global industries. Featuring the Rio Tinto 150 logo, the cover represents the essence of the company's products that play a crucial role in everyday life.

On December 12, 2023, Mr. Ashok Kumar, Postmaster General of Delhi Circle, Department of Posts, Ministry of Communications, presided over the unveiling of the stamp and special cover. The event was graced by the presence of distinguished guests, such as HE Mr Philip Green OAM, High Commissioner of Australia to India, Ms Sharlene Cosgrave, Head of Group Services at Rio Tinto, and Mr Vikram Merchant, Country Head-India at Rio Tinto.

The Country Head of India at Rio Tinto, Mr Vikram Merchant, spoke out: "As we celebrate 150 years of finding better ways to provide the materials the world needs, this customised stamp symbolises our history and ongoing commitment to sustainability and innovation. Sustainability is integral to our business, with a focus on addressing climate change and driving the low-carbon transition. We are proactively decarbonising our assets, partnering to support our customers' decarbonisation efforts, and expanding into essential materials for the energy transition. This underscores our commitment to shaping a sustainable and resilient future."

The Head of Group Services at Rio Tinto, Ms Sharlene Cosgrave, also mentioned: "We are honoured to be featured on a postage stamp by India Post—a testament to our enduring partnership with India. As a company committed to finding better ways to provide the materials the world requires, the stamp's design reflects our commitment to both responsible mining and nurturing our partnership with India."

The Australian High Commissioner to India, Mr Philip Green, exemplified: "Congratulations to Rio Tinto on its 150th anniversary. Rio Tinto exemplifies the global success of Australia's mining industry, including in India. The way Rio Tinto is combining Australian mining know-how with India's prodigious technology talent is exemplary – and offers a model for the way in which our two countries can build closer commercial ties."

The issuance of the 'Rio Tinto 150' stamp by India's Post Office is a significant gesture, highlighting the enduring partnership between Rio Tinto and India. This move not only recognises Rio Tinto's historical contributions to the Indian aluminium industry but also emphasises the shared commitment to sustainability and innovation, crucial aspects in the contemporary landscape of mineral and metal production.
