Industry leaders, environmental specialists, and policymakers convened in Muscat on Tuesday for the second Aluminium Recycling Forum, organised by Sohar Aluminium in partnership with the Environment Authority. The forum hosted two high-level panel discussions that explored the key challenges and emerging opportunities in aluminium scrap recycling.
The first session focused on the operational and regulatory barriers encountered by recyclers, collectors, and industry stakeholders while also showcasing how regional industries are embedding recycling into their wider sustainability frameworks.
The discussion also delved into how evolving regulations in Oman could more effectively support recycling logistics and ensure regulatory compliance. Additionally, they assessed how trade policies and regional cooperation could catalyse further growth and momentum within the sector.
The second panel shifted focus to the economic potential of aluminium recycling, highlighting the investment strategies necessary to fuel its expansion. Panelists explored the critical role of SMEs, the importance of green financing, ESG-driven investments, and the impact of public-private partnerships in unlocking value throughout the recycling value chain.
Held at the Intercity Hotel under the patronage of H.E. Dr Abdullah bin Ali Al Amri, Chairman of the Environment Authority, the forum focused on enhancing Oman’s aluminium recycling sector and uncovering its economic and investment opportunities. Building on the momentum of its inaugural edition, this year’s forum brought together prominent national and international voices from the aluminium and sustainability spheres to delve into global recycling trends, evolving policy landscapes, and the vital role of aluminium recycling in driving a circular economy.
Among the keynote speakers were Marlen Bertram, Director of Scenarios and Forecasts at the International Aluminium Institute; Dr Fiona Solomon, CEO of the Aluminium Stewardship Initiative; and Dr Gabriel Carmona Aparicio, Circularity Research Manager at the same organisation. Additional insights were shared by Mahmood Dailami, Secretary General of the Gulf Aluminium Council, and Dr Mohammed bin Saif Al Kalbani, Director General of Environmental Affairs at the Environment Authority. The forum reaffirmed Oman’s dedication to sustainability, positioning the aluminium recycling industry as a key pillar in the nation’s long-term development strategy.
