AML3D unlocks major deal with BAE Systems, strengthening its presence in UK & Australia

EDITED BY : 3MINS READ

AML3D Limited, based in Edinburgh, Australia, has secured a contract worth AUD $0.83 million with BAE Systems in London, UK. Under the agreement, AML3D will supply 8.5 tonnes of nickel aluminium bronze (NAB) wire feedstock. The deal represents a significant milestone in AML3D’s strategy to scale up its manufacturing operations in Australia and contribute to defence initiatives in both the UK and Australia. This development follows the launch of the company’s US facility in December 2024.

Ebert highlighted that AML3D is advancing into its next growth strategy phase by capitalising on demand from the US Navy’s Submarine Industrial Base to broaden its reach into allied defence markets. In addition to the contract with BAE Systems, the company is actively pursuing further opportunities with other U.K.-based defence partners.

AML3D CEO Sean Ebert said, “AML3D has been developing its relationship with the BAE Systems for over a year. It is very exciting to see that work translate into an initial contract from BAE Systems. It is even more exciting that this contract is planned to be just the first and I look forward to giving updates on additional contracts as the programme progress. AML3D is moving into the next phase of our growth strategy, which includes leveraging the extraordinary growth and demand we are experiencing within the US Navy’s Submarine industrial base to expand into the Australia and the UK defence sectors.”

The agreement with BAE Systems aligns with AML3D’s broader strategy to scale its operations through targeted defence and industrial partnerships. In the first half of 2024, around 80 per cent of the company’s sales came from U.S.-based customers, underscoring its expanding presence in the American market. To support this growing demand, AML3D established a US Technology Centre and secured a A$2.27 million contract with the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) to supply 3D-printed components for essential power generation infrastructure.

Defence continued to be a key focus for AML3D during the period. The company signed a Manufacturing License Agreement with BlueForge Alliance to contribute to the US Navy’s submarine program. It delivered its ARCEMY systems to major suppliers, including Laser Welding Solutions and Cogitic Corporation, helping to alleviate supply chain pressures within the US Department of Defense.

AML3D completed a $30 million institutional placement to support its long-term growth strategy in December 2024. The capital will be used to scale up operations in the US, establish a European Technology Centre to serve the UK defence sector and accelerate research and development initiatives.

“Beyond this BAE Systems contract, AML3D is developing opportunities with other companies supporting the UK defence sector. And while winning defence contracts can take time, I am confident that we will be in a position to announce additional orders from the UK and Australian defence sectors to compliment the huge momentum we are seeing in the US,” Ebert added.

In January 2025, AML3D delivered prototype tailpiece components—3D printed using Copper-Nickel alloy—for the Virginia-Class nuclear submarine program under the AUKUS partnership. Valued at approximately A$156,000, the components will undergo testing before being installed on a Virginia-Class submarine. AML3D noted that the parts were manufactured in under five weeks, a significant improvement over the typical 17-month lead time required by traditional manufacturing methods.
