Last week, the Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI) increased its membership to 300 by welcoming Wyda South Africa as an Industrial User. This achievement comes less than two years after reaching 200 members in November 2021. According to Chanel Swartz, Internal Sales, Wyda South Africa shares the same goals as ASI.
The Internal Sales Head from Wyda South Africa exclaimed in a press release that his enterprise had targets similar to that of ASI: “As one of the largest foil converters in Africa, we feel the need to align ourselves to ASI in order to improve our performance and scale up our progress on key environmental, social and governance issues.”
Wyda South Africa is a subsidiary of Wyda Industria de Embalagens, a Brazilian company specialising in food packaging. Wyda South Africa focuses on producing disposable aluminium foil containers, trays, and dishes for the food processing and catering industry.
The ASI was established in June 2015 with only 13 members to promote sustainable aluminium production. Since then, the organisation has developed its first sustainability standards in 2017 and has grown significantly.
ASI is a global entity dedicated to setting parallel industrial standards and certifications in the aluminium industry by entwining all stakeholders together to achieve sustainable production methods, material chain-of-custody procedures, recycling, social impacts related to aluminium production, and production standards.
