Aluminium scrap exports from the United States stabilised in August 2024, following two months of decline. According to the US Census Bureau survey, the export volume remained at 168,000 tonnes in August, unchanged from July's figures.
Back-to-back, in June and July, the United States' aluminium scrap exports decreased while the imports grew in both months. In June, the export volume dwindled by 10.42 per cent M-o-M from 192,000 tonnes to 172,000 tonnes, while the import during the same month increased from 57,400 tonnes to 58,900 tonnes. In July, the exports decreased further by 2.33 per cent M-o-M to stand at 168,000 tonnes, whereas the imports continued to increase to 65,600 tonnes, marking an impressive M-o-M growth of 11.38 per cent.
During January- August, the United States' total volume of aluminium scrap export was 1.38 million tonnes, down by 1 per cent from 1.39 million tonnes, following the Y-o-Y downfall of 6.15 per cent from 179,000 tonnes in August 2023 to 168,000 tonnes in August 2024.
The increase in export volume to India and Malaysia primarily contributed to the stability of the United States' total aluminium scrap exports in August. Exports to India rose to 35,400 tonnes, up 7.93% from 32,800 tonnes in July, while exports to Malaysia increased to 31,200 tonnes, compared to 29,400 tonnes in the previous month.
However, on a year-on-year basis, exports to India in August 2024 demonstrated a decline of 21.68 per cent from 45,200 tonnes, but to Malaysia increased by 18.18 per cent from 26,400 tonnes.
During January-August 2024, the United States aluminium scrap exports to India totalled 282,000 tonnes versus 319,000 tonnes a year earlier, and the aggregated export volume to Malaysia amounted to 252,000 tonnes compared to 244,000 tonnes during the corresponding period of the previous year.
