Aurukun Bauxite Project is being felicitated as the newest member of the exploration membership class by the Australian Aluminium Council. It is a joint venture between Glencore and MDP Bauxite Pty Ltd (under Mitsubishi subsidiary) and is extended all over the bauxite mining area near Aurukun situated on the west coast of Cape York, Queensland. This project has the potential to yield 8 million metric tonnes of bauxite per annum, sustaining the unit for at least a decade from inception.
{alcircleadd}The project would need approval from the government and other regulatory boards along with an acceptance document coming from the traditional owners of the mining ground. When operational and at its full capacity, the project would employ at least 400 people. Another 300 would receive daily wage employment during the under-construction phase of two years.
Moreover, the mining site is located on the indigenous lands of the Wik Waya People which make their participation even more important for the integration process. Since they are the traditional owners, the government won’t decide on anything without them saying yes.
Bauxite mining industries in Australia have an experience of more than 60 years and they are still practising on a large scale. This project is apparently the second member in the bauxite exploration class, which showcases the importance of sharing knowledge with new entrants even before actual mining starts. This also leaves a sense of transparency in the industry.
