Bharat Aluminium Company Limited (BALCO), one of India’s iconic aluminium producers has taken a significant step towards sustainability by introducing six Electric Vehicles (EVs) into its waste management fleet in Korba. Korba is a city and an industrial area in Korba District in the Indian state of Chhattisgarh.
With a load capacity of 1,000 kilograms each, these EVs enhance efficient and segregated waste collection, promoting systematic and eco-friendly waste disposal. In a further push towards green operations, BALCO has also deployed electric lithium-ion forklifts within its facilities.
Mr. Rajesh Kumar, CEO and Director of BALCO, stated, “At BALCO, we are actively investing in innovative green solutions that not just transform our operations but inspire a movement towards sustainability. By enabling cleaner technologies and encouraging people to adopt sustainable practices, we are building a greener future for communities to thrive in.”
These forklifts have boosted operational efficiency and substantially cut down carbon emissions and fuel consumption. These initiatives are part of BALCO’s vision to decarbonise its Light Motor Vehicle (LMV) fleet by 2030. Additionally, the company is steadily transitioning its core plant mobility processes to low-emission alternatives, reinforcing its commitment to sustainable industrial practices.
BALCO’s dedication to sustainability has earned national recognition, including the prestigious ‘Future Ready Factory of the Year’ award by IMEA and the National Energy Leader award by CII at the Energy Excellence Summit. The company continues integrating sustainable practices across all its operations, driving meaningful environmental impact.
BALCO actively encourages its employees to adopt electric vehicles by offering them at subsidised rates, fostering a culture of sustainable commuting. Through awareness workshops, green energy initiatives, and plantation drives, the company consistently engages with its community to promote environmental consciousness. These efforts reflect BALCO’s commitment to nurturing greener, more sustainable communities.
Reinforcing its commitment to efficient waste management, BALCO has adopted the Solid and Liquid Resource Management (SLRM) model, which prioritises waste segregation at the source. The system ensures the separate collection of biodegradable, non-biodegradable, and sanitary waste through colour-coded bins, streamlining the disposal process and promoting responsible waste handling.
With a strong focus on cleanliness and sustainability, BALCO is shaping a greener, healthier township. Initiatives like the development of Nehru Garden, featuring native plant species, are transforming Balconagar into a vibrant hub of green recreational spaces.
