Ball Corporation’s commitment to sustainability is evident in its concerted efforts towards renewable energy adoption and recycled content integration. With renewable sources contributing to over half of its global electricity usage, including a full transition at US beverage packaging plants, Ball has achieved a noteworthy 50% reduction in the global scope of two greenhouse gas emissions compared to the preceding year.

Recycled content advancements

Noteworthy progress has been made in collaboration with suppliers to augment recycled content in products, culminating in a global beverage packaging average of 70% recycled content—a 4% increase from the prior year. These endeavours have yielded a commendable 29% reduction in Ball’s absolute greenhouse gas emissions across scopes 1-3.

Aluminium Stewardship Initiative involvement

By fostering partnerships with suppliers, Ball Corporation has ensured that all rolling mill suppliers are now members of the Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI), with 21% of procured metal being ASI-certified by the close of 2023.

Financial performance

In tandem with its sustainability achievements, Ball Corporation has delivered robust financial performance. Net sales soared to $15.34 billion, inclusive of its aerospace business, which was divested for approximately $5.6 billion. Net earnings, while marginally lower at $707 million compared to the previous year, underscore Ball’s strategic focus on sustainability-driven operations.

CEO perspective

Dan Fisher, Ball Corporation’s chair and CEO, emphasises the packaging firm’s commitment to sustainability and operational excellence. He asserted: “Following the divestment of our aerospace business, this past year presented an opportunity for us to clearly declare who we are as a focused aluminium packaging sustainability leader with an expansive product portfolio.”

“We embark on our next chapter with vigour and a relentless focus on delivering value by leveraging the full extent of our manufacturing expertise, winning operationally by prioritising efficiency, and forging lasting customer relationships by actively listening to our customers’ needs and partnering with them to make a difference,” Dan added.

Ball Corporation’s 2023 sustainability report focuses on the company’s fundamental role in shaping the future of sustainable packaging solutions. By prioritising renewable energy adoption, increasing recycled content, and fostering partnerships aligned with the Aluminium Stewardship Initiative, Ball continues to set the standard for excellence in the aluminium industry while driving positive environmental impact.
