Bauxite mining plan in Kerala’s Kadaladipara hits a roadblock

EDITED BY : 1MINS READ

The proposed bauxite mining and clay mining plan at India’s Kadaladipara in Kinanoor-Karinthalam panchayat in Kasaragod district in Kerala hit a roadblock after the public hearing was called off last Saturday, August5, due to a mass protest by the local people.

The district administration had convened the hearing over the weekend to elicit people’s opinion on the bauxite mining proposal by Ashapura Mining, a firm based in Mumbai.

An action committee formed by the political parties in opposition voiced against the proposal to lease out over 200 acres of land at Kadaladipara to Ashapura Mining, The Hindu reported.

“The people are united in opposing the proposal. A Detailed Project Report prepared in 2007 warned that mining in the thickly populated area would have serious ecological implications,” Kinanoor-Karinthalam grama panchayat president A. Vidhubala told The Hindu.

The site identified for bauxite mining had been earlier considered for a solar park by the administration. It is not known with certainty why that project got shelved.

A public sector firm had also protested against the move to commence bauxite mining at the site earlier, Ms. Vidhubala noted.
