Kalyani Powertrain Ltd (KPTL), the electric mobility division of Bharat Forge Ltd, has announced the establishment of a "re-powering factory" in Pune. This facility is dedicated to converting current diesel-powered commercial vehicles into electric vehicles through retrofitting.
{alcircleadd}Retrofitting has become a prevalent practice in Europe for transforming diesel trucks and buses into eco-friendly vehicles by replacing their combustion powertrain with an electric driveline. This conversion method effectively converts these vehicles into zero-emission transportation, aligning with the growing emphasis on sustainable mobility solutions.
Vehicle electrification has a two-fold positive impact: it reduces oil demand and greenhouse gas emissions, improving health outcomes. However, it also challenges electricity demand and increases the need for certain metals like aluminium and minerals used in battery and component manufacturing.
KPTL is gearing up to inaugurate its repowering micro-factory, aiming to capitalize on the significant opportunity presented by the Indian government's mandate for old vehicle scrappage. The company will primarily focus on electrifying outdated trucks, aligning with the government's efforts to promote cleaner and more sustainable transportation solutions.
B N Kalyani, the Chairman & Managing Director of Bharat Forge, said, “We have received all certifications and completed mileage goals on test vehicles for this business. As a part of the controlled launch, KPTL has initiated a pilot programme with select customers.”
KPTL, a pioneering company, has set its sights on transforming ICE ICVs (intermediate commercial vehicles) into electric vehicles (EVs). An impressive milestone has been achieved as it became the first company in India to obtain the prestigious AIS 123 (EV retro-fitment) certification for the N3 category. This significant accomplishment paves the way for the widespread adoption of electric mobility in the commercial vehicle sector in India.
According to HDFC Securities Ltd's auto analysts, "KPTL already has two vehicle platforms and three model variants ready for field deployment. The company can provide retrofit solutions for CVs up to 12 tonnes. The Management is most excited about this category as it sees huge interest from customers across logistics businesses for EV retro fitment solutions."
Industry analysts suggest India's EV retro fitment market is in its early stages and encounters specific challenges. Nevertheless, if favourable policy initiatives are implemented, there is hope for significant growth. As India strives to achieve its zero-emission objectives, the scale of EVs required is massive, making retro fitment an appealing alternative to complement new EV production.
