Brompton has pledged to limit the carbon footprint of their folding bikes by examining the potential of low-carbon and post-consumer recycled aluminium from Hydro.
Norwegian aluminium giant Hydro is renowned for delivering top-quality aluminium with a minimal CO2 footprint, reducing emissions along the entire production value chain.
The Executive Vice President of Hydro Aluminium Metal, Eivind Kallevik, stated: “We are proud to partner with innovative customers such as Brompton Bicycles on the road to zero. Our customers across industries are setting ambitious decarbonisation targets and are queuing up to use recycled, post-consumer aluminium scrap from Europe in their products. We are excited to partner with forward-leaning customers such as Brompton.”
In addition, both entities are committed to establishing strategies to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050 and upping the utilisation of aluminium in their signature models. This partnership sets out to be a role model for decarbonising bicycle production and promoting end-of-life recycling.
The Chief Design and Engineering Officer in Brompton, Will Carleysmith, announced: “Incorporating lower carbon sources into all of our parts is a key goal for all of our future products. We know how important material selection is for the sustainability of our bicycles, and circularity starts on the drawing board. Knowing that aluminium is a material that is infinitely recyclable, without loss in quality, designing our bicycles with more aluminium will make it easier to disassemble the bike after it has reached its end-of-life and recycle the aluminium again.”
Starting in Q4 of 2023, Hydro and Brompton will experiment with the application of post-consumer recycled aluminium in wheel rims through development trials. Before this massive collaboration, Hydro had partnered with Cake, another sustainable bike brand, to deliver low-carbon raw materials for the company’s flagship models.
