Canada’s aluminium crude metal and alloys exports to the United States extended decline by 8.04 per cent for the second month in a row to stand at 206,000 tonnes in July 2020, found the US Geological Survey data. Canada’s aluminium alloy exports to the US started decreasing from June after several months of hikes, as Canada noted in response to Trump’s decision of imposing additional tariffs on Canadian aluminium that exports to the US grew only due to the reduced domestic demand caused by the COVID-19 pandemic whereas production remained intact. Canada said exports would reduce as soon as the domestic market would recover from the unprecedented crisis.
{alcircleadd}In June 2020, Canada’s aluminium crude metal and alloys exports to the US stood at 224,000 tonnes after plummeting by 6,000 tonnes or 2.7 per cent from 230,000 tonnes in May. In April, Canada exported 220,000 tonnes of aluminium crude metal and alloys to the US, meaning the exports in May increased by 10,000 tonnes or 4.55 per cent month-on-month. In March, the exports were at 203,000 tonnes, indicating a hike of 8.37 per cent in April.
Canada’s total aluminium crude metal and alloys exports to the US during the first seven months of the year (January-July) amounted to 1.47 million tonnes versus 880,000 tonnes during the same period last year.
Canada’s aluminium exports (including aluminium semis and scrap) stood at 255,000 tonnes in July, down by 5.55 per cent month-on-month from 270,000 tonnes but up 273 per cent year-on-year from 68,400 tonnes.
