The aluminium industry is undergoing a huge transformation. With sustainability and transparency now essential, businesses are prioritising responsibly sourced materials. Recently, Capral Aluminium and Vedanta unlocked a milestone.
Capral, an Australia-based national supplier and distributor of aluminium products, has been leading the charge toward more sustainable sourcing, progressively expanding its supply of ASI Chain of Custody (CoC)-certified aluminium. In February, Capral received the world’s first ASI CoC-certified aluminium shipment from Vedanta Aluminium—highlighting both a global first for Vedanta and Capral’s ongoing dedication to responsible sourcing.
“As an Australian manufacturer, we have a responsibility to ensure that the materials we source support a sustainable future. Vedanta has shown real dedication to meeting ASI standards, and we’re proud to incorporate their certified material into our supply chain,” said Luke Hawkins, Capral’s General Manager of Industrial and Supply Chain.
The Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI) Chain of Custody (CoC) certification has emerged as a vital tool in this transition, offering a clear pathway to trace certified aluminium from its origins in the mine all the way to the finished extruded product. For manufacturers, fabricators, architects, and builders, ASI CoC certification provides assurance that the aluminium they use aligns with rigorous environmental, social, and governance (ESG) standards.
Vedanta, one of the world’s top aluminium producers, secured its ASI CoC certification in May 2024 after two years of focused efforts to align its sustainability practices with ASI’s stringent requirements. As the first company in India to achieve this certification, Vedanta’s accomplishment underscores the accelerating global movement toward more responsible and transparent aluminium production.
Alok Ranjan, CMO of Vedanta Aluminium, said, “At Vedanta Aluminium, sustainability is woven into every aspect of our operations, and the ASI CoC reflects this vision. Our partnership with Capral Aluminium is in line with our vision to empower industries with high-quality, sustainably sourced aluminium that meets the most rigorous ESG standards. Vedanta is also the first Indian company to launch low-carbon aluminium – Restora and Restora Ultra.”
Vedanta has been a long-standing supplier to Capral, and its recent ASI CoC certification further strengthens this well-established partnership. With this addition, Capral now sources aluminium from four ASI CoC-certified smelters and anticipates that around 40% of its aluminium supply in 2025 will carry ASI CoC certification.
Capral’s commitment to sustainability goes beyond certification. The company has also trialled and adopted Vedanta’s Restora—a low-carbon aluminium product specifically engineered to minimise the environmental footprint of aluminium production. By integrating Restora into its sourcing portfolio, Capral is empowering Australian manufacturers with access to premium, low-carbon aluminium that aligns with evolving ESG goals.
This initiative highlights a broader transformation in aluminium sourcing, where responsible production, supply chain transparency, and low-carbon solutions are quickly becoming the norm. As more businesses choose to collaborate with certified suppliers, partnerships like that of Capral and Vedanta are setting a new standard for sustainable procurement—showcasing how strong ESG commitments can shape the future of Australian manufacturing.
