Chinalco Materials Institute takes center stage in National R&D plan for aluminium innovations

China's Ministry of Science and Technology has declared the approval of the "new ultra-high strength and toughness fatigue and damage resistance aviation aluminium alloy sheet key technology" project, which the Chinalco Materials Institute led. This is the only critical project led by the enterprise research institute in the field of "advanced structure and composite materials" this year, and it marks a significant increase in the influence of Chinalco Materials Institute in the industry.

The project will become a core scientific and technological force in the field of high-end aluminium alloys in China. The National Key R&D Program is China's highest-level R&D project, aimed at solving strategic, fundamental, and forward-looking major scientific and technological issues related to industrial core competitiveness, national independent innovation capacity, and national security. It aims to break through technological bottlenecks in significant areas of national economy and social development. 

The aim of the project: technology, production and feasibility 

The project focuses on leading enterprises, research institutes, and universities in China working together to develop and produce aviation aluminium alloy materials. The project is aimed at studying and charting the entire chain of basic theory, key preparation technology, application assessment, and evaluation of new high-performance aviation aluminium alloy materials. 

The project aims to solve core technological bottlenecks such as efficient screening and precise design of new high-performance aluminium alloy components, homogenization of microstructure control and matching control technology of strength toughness fatigue strength, microstructure design and management of high damage resistance and low crack propagation rate, and shape/control of the multi-scenario application of new high-performance aluminium alloy. 

The project also aims to develop ultra-strength and rugged aluminium alloy thick plates with independent intellectual property rights and a complete set of industrial manufacturing and application evaluation technology for high-strength and damage-resistant aluminium alloy sheets. 

What will this development bring to the Chinese aluminium market? 

This will comprehensively enhance China's independent innovation ability in the research and application of high-performance aviation aluminium alloys, ensure the urgent need for national major models, promote the systematic development of aviation aluminium alloys, promote the manufacturing industry to move towards high-end fields, and promote industrial development and progress.

Chinalco Materials Institute has been deeply involved in the research and development of high-end aluminium alloy materials for aerospace, aiming to serve the national strategy and empower the group's high-quality product offerings. It has led and participated in multiple national tasks of high-end aluminium alloy material research and development, forming an integrated research and development system of industry, academia, research, and application. The Institute has built an innovation chain of "basic theory key common technology typical component manufacturing", and in 2023, more than ten vertical projects, including the National Key R&D Plan, have been sanctioned.
