According to the statistics provided by Baichuan Yingfu, in August 2023, the electrolytic aluminium industry witnessed a capacity expansion of 47.2490 million tonnes, with a construction capacity of 42.799 million tonnes. The operating rate during this period was recorded at 90.58 per cent. China's primary aluminium production reached 3.6037 million tonnes, and the cumulative primary aluminium production from January to August amounted to 27.1104 million tonnes, reflecting a 2.62 per cent increase compared to the corresponding period last year.
In early August, the Sichuan area saw a modest reduction in production capacity owing to the Universiade and power rationing. However, it is essential to note that the effect on production capacity was limited. Regarding the resumption of production, enterprises in Chongqing and Shanxi, which had previously reduced output during the initial maintenance phase, experienced a slight resumption of production in August.
By August 31st, Yunnan's planned production capacity was restored, resulting in a total production capacity of 1.802 million tonnes. Specifically, Yunnan's production capacity in August amounted to 670,000 tonnes. Regarding the expansion of production, Yunnan province has consistently introduced more production capacity. As of August 31st, 400,000 tonnes of new production capacity had been implemented, with 150,000 tonnes added in August. In August, China saw a notable surge in its electrolytic aluminium production capacity, reaching a total of 42.799 million tonnes. This is a substantial increase of 847,700 tonnes compared to the previous month of July.
Currently, electrolytic aluminium enterprises are experiencing a period of relative stability in production, with sufficient power supply. As a result, there are no significant plans for production reduction in the electrolytic aluminium industry. Moreover, Yunnan province is anticipated to continue expanding its production capacity, with an additional 150,000 tonnes of capacity expected to be operational by September 2023.
In brief, it is projected that by September 2023, the electrolytic aluminium industry will witness a construction capacity of approximately 42.97 million tonnes, with an estimated output of around 3.51 million tonnes. This would result in an average daily output of roughly 117,700 tonnes, with a projected continuous increase in everyday work.
