Circular festivity: Domal’s aluminium trees shine in sustainable Christmas design

Domal, a renowned name in aluminium window and door systems, has collaborated with three esteemed architectural studios—Ideàs Studio, Principioattivo Architecture Group, and Studio Marco Piva—to transform the traditional Christmas tree into an aluminium inclusive symbol of sustainability and innovation. These designs, crafted using Hydro Circal 75R, a high-quality aluminium made from recycled post-consumer materials, reflect Domal’s resolution towards environmental responsibility and cutting-edge design.

This collaboration was showcased as part of MilanoDesignXmas, an annual initiative organised by TOWANT, bringing together companies and architectural studios to reinterpret festive traditions through creative and forward-thinking concepts. This year, in 2024, the installations were showcased at Spazio Domal, the company’s dynamic design hub in Milan, a space dedicated to exploring innovative solutions in building materials and designs. The event accentuated the alignment between the brand’s corporate values and the principles of sustainable architecture while celebrating the synergy between art, design, and environmental stewardship.

The installations themselves were a testament to the sustainability potential of aluminium, a material known for its durability, recyclability, and adaptability. Ideàs Studio drew inspiration from the cyclical nature of aluminium, crafting a tree with a spiral structure that symbolises collective growth and progress. The design reflects the professional journey, rising upwards to represent shared goals and aspirations while also inviting reflection on the importance of sustainability in modern design practices. Every element of their creation was fashioned from recycled aluminium, showcasing the material’s ability to combine beauty with environmental responsibility.

Principioattivo Architecture Group and Studio Marco Piva also brought their distinct creative visions to the project, contributing designs that pushed the boundaries of traditional festive symbols. 

About their creative approach for MilanoDesignXmas, Principioattivo Architecture Group representative has said "Our ready-made Christmas tree delves into the dynamic between artist and viewer: a design object encased in packaging that either safeguards its original form or encourages reinterpretation. In our work, we merge conceptual art with design to foster dialogues between objects, audiences, and their surroundings."

Each piece represented a fusion of conceptual art and practical innovation, embodying the corporate ethos of Domal while encouraging audiences to engage with the installations on a deeper, more meaningful level.
