Automated People Mover (APM), expected to open in 2024 at the Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA), has earned another key environmental award. The APM was recently awarded the Trailblazer Project of the Year award by the Los Angeles Sustainability Coalition (LASC).
{alcircleadd}Composed of recyclable aluminium shells, APM is a zero-emissions electric train that generates its own electricity using regenerative braking, which uses the kinetic energy generally wasted while braking to propel the train forward. A solar power system installed on the top of the APM's Maintenance and Storage Facility (MSF) will meet 40 per cent of the facility's energy demands and 7 per cent of the APM's total power needs.
"The positive impacts of LAX's Automated People Mover will be felt for generations to come. Sustainably built to reduce airport guests' reliance on personal automobiles and better connect them to greater Los Angeles, the project is key to our larger environmentally minded transformation," said Justin Erbacci, chief executive officer at LAWA.
However, this is not the first time APM has been honoured with such environmental awards. In 2022, it was recognised with the Envision Gold Award for Sustainable Infrastructure by the Institute for Sustainable Infrastructure (ISI) for performing extraordinarily well across numerous parameters in the Envision framework relevant to increasing quality of life, ranging from minimising light pollution, noise and vibration to boosting mobility and access to sustainable transportation alternatives.
The electric train, part of Los Angeles International Airport's (LAX) multibillion-dollar redevelopment, comprises six stops - three within the airport's Central Terminal Area (CTA) and three outside - along a 2.25-mile elevated guideway. Passengers will have assured access to the CTA in 10 minutes or less once it is operational, enabling a shortened airport arrival and departure experience.
“We are thankful to LASC for honouring the Automated People Mover with the 2023 Trailblazer Project of The Year Award and share this recognition with the project's developer, LINXS, the local workforce building the APM and the entire LAWA team helping to realise the transformation of our airport,” added Justin Erbacci.
