The Council for Scientific and Industrial Research's (CSIR) recent collaboration with Paltechnologies (Pty) Ltd (Paltech) has resulted in the development of a standard 80 mm diameter aluminium butterfly valve. Aluminium butterfly valves will be used on electrical power transformers.
{alcircleadd}Paltech manufactures high-performance butterfly valves in Southern Africa. The company’s valves are used in industries like oil, gas, petrochemicals, power, slurry, alumina, waste water, paper and pulp.
An aluminium valve is designed to handle transformer cooling. Till now, at least 260 aluminium valves have been manufactured and an order for 300 has been placed.

CSIR principal technologist Filipe Pereira said, "The realisation of the butterfly valve means that we are now able to source locally manufactured valves, eliminating the need to import valves and exploring other opportunities."
"Early estimates indicate that the manufacture of this particular valve has the potential to
create a minimum of 40 new and sustainable jobs.”
