The Emirates Environmental Group (EEG) proudly announced the successful conclusion of the 28th cycle of its national initiative, the 'Can Collection Drive,' held on November 9th, encompassing all of Emirates. Under the theme "With a 'Can do' attitude, the future is in our hands," the programme aims to raise awareness about the importance of waste segregation at the source and the value of recycling aluminium cans.

It also seeks to engage businesses and the wider community in adopting sustainable habits. Launched in 1997 as EEG's first action programme, this campaign was designed to actively involve all segments of society. It is part of EEG's ongoing dedication to fostering sustainable practices across various sectors in the UAE.
Sustainable initiative
EEG co-founder and Chairperson said, "This initiative aligns with global sustainability goals and builds on the momentum generated at COP28. In light of the urgency to address climate change and promote environmental stewardship, this campaign seeks to educate the community on the importance of recycling beverage cans, which can be recycled indefinitely. Through this collection drive, we are working to raise awareness, enhance community participation, and contribute significantly to the circular economy. To close the recycling loop, we must work as one – individuals, communities, and industries".
The drive saw enthusiastic participation from various sectors, particularly the hospitality industry, catering companies, and labour accommodations and camps, underscoring the community's dedication to environmental conservation. The results were remarkable, with EEG collecting 13,988 kilograms of aluminium cans—the highest amount gathered in a single day since the programme began. This achievement demonstrates the community's strong commitment and unified response to environmental action.
The collection mitigated 210 metric tonnes of CO2 equivalent (MTCO2e), saved 340 cubic meters of landfill space, and conserved 3,183 million BTU of energy. Recycling one ton of aluminium saves up to 95 per cent of the energy required for new production, highlighting the significant impact of these collective efforts. With the conclusion of this drive, EEG has collected a total of 29,453 kilograms since the start of the year, achieving 92.6 per cent of its 2024 target of 31,800 kilograms.
A well-planned drive
The Can Collection Drive follows a well-organised plan encouraging participation from local communities, academic institutions, and government and private sector organisations. Participants are invited to collect and deposit aluminium beverage cans at designated collection points across the UAE. In collaboration with local authorities and recycling companies, EEG ensures that the collected cans are processed efficiently, reinforcing the idea that every can recycled contributes to a healthier environment.
"Research shows that aluminium industry is projecting a significant increase in Aluminium Can production; therefore, transforming our recycling practices has never been more critical. The impact of the "Can Collection Campaign" will lead to significant reduction of greenhouse gas emissions annually. Thus, we need to collectively succeed in recycling a much higher percentage of Aluminium Cans produced in the UAE to help achieve the Net-Zero by 2050. Each beverage can that ends up in a landfill represents a missed opportunity for sustainability," added EEG co-founder and Chairperson.
As part of the initiative, EEG also offers educational workshops and resources to raise awareness about the benefits of recycling, the importance of waste reduction, and practical actions that individuals can take to help support a greener planet. Contributors' growing participation and enthusiasm highlighted a heightened awareness and understanding of sustainable practices, underscoring the drive's success in fostering environmental literacy.
Looking ahead, EEG encourages everyone to participate in future initiatives and continue working together to build a sustainable community. The UAE community is invited to support this important cause and participate in the annual "Can Collection Campaign" to help drive environmental change.
