Climate change is one of the most challenging situations to tackle, especially for the workers who work under hot conditions; ensuring a safe and sound environment under such a situation is really important. With this, Emirates Global Aluminium (EGA), one of the world's largest producers of 'premium aluminium' announced on Monday, October 31, that the company had reached its goal of recording zero incidents of heat-related sickness among its staff and subcontractors who worked outside this summer.
{alcircleadd}The "Beat the Heat" initiative at EGA is a summer-long, intensive effort throughout the business. Employees are taught the early warning signals of heat stress in themselves and other people. They are required to perform hydration tests before and during their shifts and are also urged to take frequent breaks and cold showers.
To further enhance the early identification of heat stress, volunteers at EGA tested wearable technologies this summer. Similar to equipment worn by professional athletes, it continuously monitors heart rates and other health indicators, alerting the wearer and safety personnel to possible problems and allowing for quicker response.
"EGA operates high temperature processes in a very hot region, putting us firmly on the global frontline of addressing the very real and growing industrial hazard of heat-related illness. We have made great progress over several decades, and have lessons relevant for the many companies facing this issue. One key lesson is that working safely in hot conditions requires the focus of everyone in the company, and I am proud of our people for achieving zero heat-related illnesses this summer," said Abdulnasser Bin Kalban, Chief Executive Officer of EGA.
In the EGA production areas, cooling booths, drinking fountains, ice makers, and portable air conditioners are kept to make the workers feel comfortable. In addition to reusable water bottles and access to electrolyte drinks, customers may also get UV protection and ointment to avoid heat rash.
