Emirates Global Aluminium welcomed His Highness Mohamed Ibrahim Al Hammadi at the Al Taweelah facility in Abu Dhabi. He is the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Emirates Nuclear Energy Company (ENEC), Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation is responsible for deploying and owning nuclear energy plants in the UAE.
{alcircleadd}Chief Executive Officer Abdulnasser Bin Kalban and a group of executives greeted His Excellency and his delegation to EGA. The discussions focused on the two firms' respective contributions to the future of sustainable energy in the UAE. Via a long-term arrangement, ENEC provides power to EWEC, which EWEC then sells to other parties for dispatch.
"The Barakah Nuclear Energy Plant provides a significant amount of EWEC's clean electricity and will continue to deliver the majority of its emissions-free energy for decades. As the only source of carbon-free power that generates baseload, 24/7 electricity in the UAE, nuclear energy has a central role to play in securing the decarbonisation of the UAE's power sector. Key industrial players like EGA who are looking to decarbonize their operations are already benefitting greatly from the reliable and clean electricity produced at the Barakah Plant," said His Excellency Mohamed Ibrahim Al Hammadi.
With the help of TAQA, Dubal Holding, and EWEC, EGA has a strategic plan to sell its natural gas-fired power plants and purchase all of the electricity it needs from EWEC through the grid, with a growing amount of renewable energy. EGA would then be the company's biggest client.
With two of the four 1400MW units already commercially operational, the third unit soon to begin commercial operations, and the fourth unit preparing for operational readiness later this year, ENEC's Barakah plant is already the largest source of clean, zero-carbon electricity in the UAE and the larger Arab World.
"The UAE's ambitious energy transition provides the largest single opportunity for decarbonisation at EGA. Alongside solar, nuclear power will be a major part of EGA's energy mix over the decades ahead, enabling us to provide the low-carbon aluminium the world needs to make modern life possible," mentioned Abdulnasser Bin Kalban, Chief Executive Officer of Emirates Global Aluminium.
Nuclear energy, which generates a sizable amount of electricity continuously, is essential to sustain the UAE's expanding intermittent renewable sources, which provide power only during the day. Electricity produced by nuclear energy is crucial for decarbonizing heavy industries since these sectors require significant amounts of consistent electricity to run industrial activities like smelting aluminium.
