EOS GmbH, a global leader in industrial 3D printing of metals and plastics, announced that its widely used metal material, EOS Aluminium AlSi10Mg, is now produced entirely from recycled feedstock. This shift is designed to lower carbon emissions and promote sustainability in additive manufacturing.
EOS Aluminium AlSi10Mg
EOS Aluminium AlSi10Mg joined the company's Responsible Products portfolio in April 2024, initially using 30 per cent recycled feedstock to achieve a 25 per cent reduction in carbon dioxide emissions. Now produced with 100 per cent recycled feedstock, EOS assures that the material retains the same properties, characteristics, and performance in additively manufactured parts — eliminating the need for existing customers to requalify applications.
"We're proud to have developed our first EOS metal material made with 100% recycled feedstock and to have achieved so much in less than a year. We will continue to explore ways to reduce the carbon footprint of our customers' applications with every EOS product – from materials and hardware to design optimisation – they all add up to a more responsible end-use product for our customers and the climate," said Sophia Heyl, product specialist at EOS.
According to EOS, the updated material achieves a 77 per cent reduction in CO₂ emissions compared to its previous version and an 83 per cent reduction when compared to AlSi10Mg made from 100% virgin raw materials. Below is a list of specifications for EOS Aluminium AlSi10Mg:
Other EOS-responsible products
VIRTUCYCLE is a take-back program that collects used polymer materials and components, using sustainably sourced energy to convert additive manufacturing (AM) powder into recycled, high-performance injection moulding granules.
PA 1101: A "climate-neutral" biobased polymer material, with greenhouse gas emissions offset through carbon credits. PA 2200 CarbonReduced: A polymer material with lower greenhouse gas emissions, achieved through green energy in the production process.
"We are continuing our path towards Responsible Manufacturing and expanding our portfolio of Responsible Products stepwise. By minimising waste, reducing the environmental footprint and prioritising eco-friendly materials, organisations can both protect our planet and create a more efficient and resilient business model," said Björn Hannappel, head of sustainability at EOS, in the same release.
The company confirmed that the new material comes at no additional cost. EOS Aluminium AlSi10Mg is now available for purchase through the EOS Store or by reaching out to the EOS Life Cycle Solutions team. The EOS Carbon Calculator estimates an organisation's additive manufacturing carbon emissions and costs by analysing key project metrics and emission data.
