DP World, an Emirati multinational logistics company based in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, has recently joined the First Movers Coalition (FMC) and committed to having 5 per cent of its marine power sourced from hybrid engines and zero-emission fuels by 2030.
The FMC, led by the World Economic Forum and the US Government, focuses on decarbonising challenging sectors such as aluminium, aviation, chemicals, concrete, shipping, steel, and trucking, collectively responsible for 30 per cent of global emissions.
As part of this initiative, DP World aims to accelerate a green and inclusive transition to a net-zero future by adopting emerging technologies. Specifically, DP World plans to achieve its target by introducing two hybrid-electric and five methanol-enabled vessels for short-sea shipping, ensuring that at least 5% of its fleet is powered by zero-emission fuels by 2030. P&O Ferries, a part of DP World's Marine Services, has already introduced the world's first ferry with a hybrid diesel-electric power plant.
At the same time, Unifeeder Group, another division of DP World Marine Services, has committed to deploying two new methanol-capable container feeder vessels in Europe. The overall goal is to aggregate purchasing power, attract more investments in zero-emission solutions, and scale production to address the shipping industry's decarbonisation challenges. DP World anticipates a demand of approximately 38,000 tonnes of clean methanol per year by 2030 to power its five methanol-enabled vessels.
Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem, the Chairman and CEO of DP World Group, commented, "Joining the First Movers Coalition is a clear signal of our intent to tackle the climate impact of our operations while maintaining the efficient flow of global trade. Electrification and alternative fuels are integral components of our sustainability strategy, playing a pivotal role in significantly reducing emissions in our business and tracking towards our ambitions to be carbon neutral by 2040 and net zero by 2050. Driving demand for new fuels and technology will be key to creating an efficient market that works for everyone."
Jesper Kristensen, the Group Chief Operating Officer of Marine Services at DP World, said, "Decarbonisation is a core focus for DP World, and as part of the First Movers Coalition, we can work collectively with like-minded organisations to drive positive change actively. The entire supply chain, from producers to distributors to shipping companies, must collaborate to facilitate decarbonisation. This is because the ambition to drive this change can only happen when all players in the supply chain move from commitment to action together."
In the current year, DP World achieved a nearly 50 per cent reduction in carbon emissions from its operations in the UAE by utilizing power generated from renewable sources supplied by the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA).
