India's leading manufacturer of calcined petroleum coke, Goa Carbon Limited (GCL) and BITS Pilani, K K Birla Goa Campus, have formally agreed to collaborate on long-term research and development initiatives that prioritise environmental, social, and governance (ESG) principles, and operational excellence.
{alcircleadd}Calcined petroleum coke is a vital raw material required in primary aluminium production. It is the primary carbon material used as an anode in electrolytic technology, which helps in transforming alumina to aluminium during the smelting process.
BITS Pilani, Goa Campus will lend its knowledge and resources to study and improve current operational paradigms. It will materialise an extremely efficient Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) model for the plant's operation to ensure reliably predictable outputs while maintaining adherence to environmental decorum.
Chairman Dempo Group and Goa Carbon Limited, and President Goa Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI), Mr Shrinivas Dempo, exclaimed: "It is a momentous occasion for Goa Carbon as we sign the MoA with BITS Pilani. We have been the front runner in adopting best practices to achieve operational excellence & sustainable growth."
Applauding the MoA, Mr Anupam Misra, Executive Director of Goa Carbon Limited, elaborated: "This collaboration between Goa Carbon and BITS Pilani, Goa Campus underscores our commitment to our core values, including integrity, fairness, solicitude, teamwork, innovation, and social responsibility."
"It is our constant endeavour to remain proactive in exceeding environmental standards and raising operational benchmarks for the benefit of our stakeholders. Much of our Calcined Petroleum Coke (CPC) is supplied to the strategic Aluminium industry, and we also want to contribute positively towards achieving the sustainability objectives of our valued customers," Mr Misra added.
The Director of BITS Pilani, Goa Campus, Prof. Suman Kundu, was ecstatic to share his experience: "Our skilled faculty members' research capabilities would continue to bolster the efficiency of industries in all spheres of operations and also share the best practices across industries to meet their ESG objectives."
The names of officials present at the signing have been listed below:
- Mr Anupam Misra, Executive Director, Goa Carbon Ltd and Prof. Suman Kundu, Director, BITS Pilani, Goa Campus, signed the MoA.
- The signing took place in the presence of Mr Shrinivas Dempo, Prof. S D Manjare, Prof. Meenal Kowshik, Dr. Amol Deshpande, and other senior officials of BITS Pilani and Goa Carbon.
- Mr Shrinivas Dempo is the Chairman of Dempo Group and Goa Carbon Limited and President of the Goa Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI).
- Prof. S D Manjare is a Professor of Chemical Engineering at BITS Pilani, Goa Campus.
- Prof. Meenal Kowshik is the Dean - Administration at BITS Pilani, Goa Campus.
- Dr. Amol Deshpande is the Principal Investigator of the project.
The partnership is aimed at defining this relatively new awakening of co-conscious minds wherein companies come together to formulate a shared commitment towards sustainability and operational excellence so that a significant strive towards a sustainable future can be observed globally.
