The groundbreaking ceremony for Aluminium Dynamics, one of the biggest economic development projects in western Lowndes County, is expected to occur in early March. Along with many co-locating clients, the $2.5 billion aluminium mill will be situated close to the Golden Triangle Regional Airport, and Steel Dynamics will own the plant.
Activities on the site are expected to start within the next few weeks. Over seven years, 1,000 jobs will be produced at the mega site in addition to spin-off positions. Additionally, permits can be completed by the spring, and tree removal can start in a few weeks. As part of the agreement, the Golden Triangle Development Link (GTR) will also cooperate with the Lowndes County Board of Supervisors to start $25 million worth of road construction close to the site.
"They are in preparations of getting their construction trailers in. We anticipate they'll be delivered middle part of February – parking lot, water, sewer, and power getting to them. That will be the heartbeat of the whole construction site while it's building," said Joe Max Higgins, GTR LINK CEO.
The talks about this much-awaited project were already carried out in November 2022, when Gov. Tate Reeves and the Mississippi Legislature had finalized the construction of one of the greatest economic development projects of Lowndes County. The Mississippi House and Senate had also approved the tax incentives for the companies' expansion in the Golden Triangle.
The $2.5 billion aluminium mill project is expected to include a recycled aluminium flat-rolled facility, apart from the state-of-the-art low-carbon, aluminium flat-rolled mill and a biocarbon production facility by Steel Dynamics. The project is a part of Steel Dynamics' expansion of its Columbus, Mississippi, campus, which is situated on a Tennessee Valley Authority Mega Site.
