Henkel has created a cutting-edge low-temperature cleaner for aluminium beverage cans that will soon be accessible worldwide. Bonderite C-IC 72000 series cleans at a lower temperature when used in conventional spray systems, lowering the plant's carbon footprint using less natural gas.
Results will vary depending on the processes used by each facility. Still, in a recent study, a client reduced their natural gas consumption, which resulted in a 38 per cent decrease in carbon emissions. The low-temperature cleaner technology from Henkel is now accessible in LATAM and will be available throughout the world in 2023.
The Bonderite C-IC 72000 series cleaner requires a lower working temperature of 43°C (110°F) than traditional cleaners, which generally run at roughly 60°C (140°F). This makes it possible for can producers to considerably lower their energy usage. The lower temperature improves the working conditions for staff members close to the cleaning bath and reduces the carbon footprint.
"Our initial line tests show a 32% reduction in natural gas consumption at the plant from turning off one boiler; additionally, a 5% to 20% reduction in water was achieved during recent trials," said Fabio Portelinha, Technical Customer Service Manager at Henkel Adhesive Technologies.
The cleaner also has benefits in terms of water usage and maintenance. According to Henkel's laboratory tests, the cleaner has minimal foaming properties and produces 75 per cent less foam than conventional cleaners. There is minimal to no carry-over of foam into subsequent cleaning steps, in contrast to traditional cleansers.
Additionally, it lessens residue during washing cycles, maintaining cleaner rinse stages. In addition, the lower bath temperature produces less evaporative losses and a less corrosive atmosphere, which is projected to increase the lifespan of the steel washer and its component parts. As a result, less wear is generated, and less water is used, extending the cleaning system's useful life.
"The lower temperature product provides very good cleaning performance and has an excellent sustainability contribution. Bonderite C-IC 72000 series cleaner efficiently removes lubricants from the forming process. Combined with the reduction of natural gas, reduced carbon footprint, and water reduction, this innovative cleaner contributes to greater sustainability throughout the can making process," said Mireia Martinez, Head of Innovation and Marketing & Strategy for the Metal business unit at Henkel Adhesive Technologies.
The product line for the Bonderite C-IC 72000 series will comprise both conventional 2-pack systems with separate etchant additions and single-pack formulations with integrated cleaner and etchant in various activity levels to meet the demands of the market.
