India's biggest aluminium manufacturing company and the world's most significant flat-rolled products player and recycler of aluminium, Hindalco Industries' Chairman Kumar Mangalam Birla, has been awarded the highest civilian honour of India, the Padma Award 2023 for his commendable contribution to the field of trade and industry.
{alcircleadd}Kumar Mangalam Birla is also the Chairman of the American industrial aluminium company Novelis Inc. headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia, United States.
His accomplishments are numerous in the business world. Many had believed the weight of legacy would be too much for the young man when he took up the group's banner after his father's unexpected death.
He has disproven their claims, but he has proven them incorrect. In the 28 years since he has been in charge, he has accelerated growth, increasing the group's turnover 30 times from $2 billion to $60 billion (as of March 31, 2022).
He oversaw 40 acquisitions, a record for an Indian multinational. The company operates in 36 countries across six continents, with overseas operations accounting for more than half its revenue. Hindalco, Kumar Birla's flagship metals company, acquired Atlanta-based Novelis Inc in 2007, making it the world's leading producer of aluminium rolled products and the largest recycler of aluminium. With over 12,000 employees, the company operates 33 facilities in nine countries. Novelis has a four-million-tonne global rolling capacity.
Hindalco Industries subsidiary Novelis acquired Aleris, a global aluminium flat-rolled producer based in the United States, in 2020. This acquisition elevates Hindalco to the world's largest aluminium company, with a global footprint of 49 cutting-edge manufacturing facilities in North America, Europe, and Asia.
