Hindalco’s Belagavi Works plant in India has been enrolled under the Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI) and given the ASI Performance Standard V2 (2017) Certification. The first alumina refinery in India, Belagavi Works specialises in making calcined alumina, special calcined alumina, alumina hydrate and special alumina hydrate.
{alcircleadd}The plant located in Karnataka was presented with the certification only last week. It produces almost ten dozen vivid grades of alumina portfolios. The plant yields alumina hydrates and special alumina for various non-metallurgical applications like ceramics, refractory, polishing, also for fire retardant filler in polymer composites zeolite and alum.
After this successful accomplishment, Hindalco can claim to have three facilities attested under the ASI’s Performance Standard Certification.
The Chief Executive Officer at ASI, Fiona Solomon, praised Hindalco for the grand achievement.
“We congratulate Hindalco Industries Ltd for achieving ASI Performance Standard Certification at its Belagavi Works alumina refinery. While the vast majority of global alumina production is calcined and destined for aluminium smelting, a smaller share is used in a wide variety of speciality applications where the characteristics of alumina, including strength, wear resistance, temperature resistance, surface finish or chemical inertness, are desired. Belagavi Works’ ASI Certification shows its commitment to ESG policies and practices in line with the ASI Performance Standard,” she said.
The ASI Certification Standard points out 59 criteria divided under three sustainability pillars that encompass multiple issues, such as biodiversity, Indigenous Peoples’ rights, and greenhouse gas emissions. LiberoAssurance has completed the third-party audit required for the certification.
The President & CEO of Specialty Aluminas & Chemicals, Hindalco Industries Ltd., Saurabh Khedekar, exclaimed that the certification thus amplifies the company’s ardent commitment to sustainability.
“We at Hindalco Specialty Aluminas and Chemicals believe that sustainable operations are the foundation of our present and the bedrock of our future. Certification of Hindalco’s Belagavi unit, the first alumina refinery in India to be accorded this certification, is a testimony to our deep commitment to the sustainability agenda. This certification for ASI Performance Standard enhances our conviction in showcasing our holistic approach to the ESG agenda to all our stakeholders. ASI certification is the most valuable third-party assessment of the sustainability of our Belagavi unit and will further our commitment to our stated purpose of manufacturing materials that make the world Greener, Stronger and Smarter.”
The globally acknowledged ASI Certification Programme has evolved through an extensive multi-stakeholder consultation process and is by far the only voluntary sustainability standard initiative for the aluminium value chain. ASI Performance Standard certifications focus on ‘material stewardship’, addressing issues such as product design, life cycle assessment, management of processed scrap and collection and recycling of products at the end-of-life.
