Hydro is collaborating with CAKE and Vattenfall on the pioneering initiative 'Cleanest Dirt Bike Ever,' encouraging the automobile industry to reduce its carbon footprint. The initiative aims to motivate the automobile sector to minimise carbon emissions in manufacturing techniques via new collaborations.
CAKE and Vattenfall have pledged to create the cleanest dirt bike ever by eliminating carbon emissions from the manufacturing chain of the electric CAKE Kalk OR bike by 2025. Under this initiative, Hydro will provide low-carbon aluminium, the Hydro CIRCAL 100R, and EcoDesign knowledge to help convert the motorcycle to new aluminium alloys.
Jonas Bjuhr, Managing Director at Hydro Extrusions Sweden, said, "We are thrilled to join forces with CAKE and Vattenfall on the 'Cleanest Dirt Bike Ever' project. At Hydro, we are fully committed to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050 or earlier, and our dedication extends to becoming a prominent driver in delivering substantial quantities of near zero-carbon aluminium by 2030. Together with CAKE and Vattenfall, we hope to push the limits of sustainability, explore innovative solutions, and inspire the entire industry to participate in forging a cleaner future."
Several significant partners have joined the project since its inception, including hlins Racing and SKF for supplying specific parts for the bike, but with aluminium accounting for 25 per cent of the Kalk OR's weight and 34 per cent of its carbon emissions, Hydro's contribution will be critical to the project's success.
"Vattenfall and CAKE are happy to announce the addition of another partner in the Cleanest Dirt Bike Ever project. Hydro contributes extensive knowledge and a strong commitment to decarbonising their production process. Through our collaboration, we will explore a diverse range of options and potential zero-emission solutions for the Kalk OR. Since aluminium is a crucial material in all CAKE motorcycles, reducing its carbon footprint will have a significant impact on the bike. Demonstrating the potential of low emission solutions with aluminium will hopefully also influence the entire industry," said Stefan Ytterborn, CEO of CAKE.
Vattenfall and CAKE investigated cleaner aluminium options accessible before 2025 as part of the project. Hydro is a new partner offering aluminium components manufactured from up to 100% recycled post-consumer scrap. Hydro will also help with the design and engineering of the bike so that it may utilise various alloys and potentially more extruded aluminium.
