On December 15, 2022, the luxury automotive giant Mercedes-Benz and global leader in low-carbon aluminium production, Norsk Hydro, announced that latter will supply the German automaker with low-carbon aluminium for a range of models from 2023, including its electric EQ models, as the luxury carmaker plans to decarbonise its supply chain.
{alcircleadd}The Mercedes-Benz brand already uses Hydro-supplied components and aims to become carbon-neutral by 2039 and use near-zero carbon aluminium by 2030. The electric car manufacturers are eyeing more aluminium usage to make them lighter to increase the vehicle's mileage, and the batteries contain lightweight metal.
Markus Schaefer, the Chief Technology Officer at Mercedes-Benz, said, "This is an important signal to accelerate change in the aluminium industry and increase the availability of low-carbon aluminium."
Mercedes Benz stated, “A fully electric luxury Mercedes-Benz limousine can contain more than 700 kilograms of aluminium, including the battery.”
Furthermore, the two organizations will work together to conduct more research on the application of recycled and low-carbon aluminium in motor vehicles. Reduxa, Hydro's carbon-neutral product, will produce less than 3.0 kilograms of carbon dioxide per kilogram of aluminium, one kilogram less than its current low-carbon standard.
