According to the data revealed by the Ministry of Mines, India’s primary aluminium production in the June quarter of FY2024-25 increased by 1.2 per cent year-on-year to 10.43 lakh tonnes from 10.28 lakh tonnes.

With this hike, India has secured the significant global position as the second-largest producer of aluminium. The rise in aluminium production indicates robust economic activity across industrial sectors like energy, infrastructure, building and construction, automotive, and machinery.

In 2023, India accounted for 6 per cent of global production, churning out 4.1 million tonnes of primary aluminium. India is the second-largest producer and third-largest consumer of primary aluminium in the world.

According to AL Circle’s report, India’s current per capita aluminium consumption in 2023 was 3.1 kg, and is likely to grow in response to the two-fold jump in demand by 2033 from 4.5 million tonnes at the present to 9 million tonnes.

India has also ranked as the world’s third-largest producer of limestone and the fourth-largest producer of iron ore, with the production volume of 116 million tonnes and 79 million tonnes, respectively. While the output of lime recorded an increase of 1.8 per cent Y-o-Y from 114 million tonnes, the production of iron ore grew 9.7 per cent from 7.2 million tonnes.

Production of manganese also jumped by 11 per cent to 1 million tonnes in Q1 of FY2025 from 0.9 million tonnes during the corresponding period of the previous year.
