Niche Fusina Rolled Products (Fusina), one of the world’s leading producers of industrial rolled aluminium products, has committed to procuring all of its primary aluminium from environmentally conscious suppliers with low-carbon practices starting in September 2023.

However, according to our information from Italy, Concord Resources Limited will facilitate this responsible sourcing, and to ensure transparency and accuracy, detailed carbon footprints for the sourced aluminium will be supplied by CarbonChain.

CarbonChain is built on the world's most trusted carbon accounting frameworks and standards. CarbonChain builds technology that enables data-driven climate action in the world's supply chains. However, to get there, the private and financial sectors need robust, comprehensive and valuable greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions data to see their most significant impacts and risks and take effective action. The organisation help fill this gap, equipping companies and financial institutions with the tools and insights they need to manage their emissions and build lower-carbon supply chains.

Niche Fusina, a company based in the industrial area of Fusina close to Venice, Italy, is implementing an innovative approach to reduce the carbon footprint of its custom-made coils, sheets, and plates. By adopting this method, they aim to expand their product offerings to customers, especially industrial manufacturers, with a broader selection of lower-carbon options. This initiative is a follow-up to Fusina's recent introduction of its carbon transparency scheme, ensuring that all customers across various markets receive detailed product carbon footprint reports. Additionally, prospective buyers can also request access to these informative reports.

Vincenzo Zinni, the CEO of Niche Fusina Rolled Products, said, “From transparency to action, Fusina is taking tangible steps towards a more sustainable aluminium industry. By offering manufacturers verifiably lower-carbon products in partnership with Concord Resources, we empower them to make informed procurement decisions to reduce their product footprints and differentiate in the net-zero transition. CarbonChain’s calculations underpin both initiatives, providing actionable data that we and our customers can trust.”

The company built to support the Italian aluminium industry, Niche Fusina, has made a new commitment to ensure that all of its primary aluminium supply meets or exceeds the carbon intensity threshold of 6 tCO2e/t (tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent per tonne of aluminium), and strives to achieve even lower emissions whenever feasible. This dedication sets a high standard, considering the global average for primary aluminium currently stands at 16.1 tCO2e/t.

Over the years, different companies have taken ownership of the Niche Fusina, and significant investments have upgraded the equipment to maintain a competitive position in the market. Fusina's dedication to reducing emissions in its supply chain and internal production processes will significantly diminish the overall carbon footprint associated with its products. The progress made in emissions reductions will be closely monitored and transparently communicated to customers and potential buyers.

Fusina caters to marine, commercial transportation, and industrial customers actively seeking lower-carbon alternatives. These alternatives are sought to comply with regulatory and reporting obligations or achieve their climate objectives, particularly in their journey towards net-zero emissions. In order to produce lower-carbon primary aluminium, Fusina primarily relies on renewable electricity, such as hydro-powered electricity. Concord Resources Limited, a global metals merchant, has been chosen as the exclusive supplier of 100 per cent of Fusina's primary aluminium to ensure the fulfilment of their low-carbon criteria.

Sustainability in the Global Aluminium Industry

Mark Hansen, the CEO of Concord Resources Limited, said, “Concord is proud to support Fusina’s goal to transition manufacturing supply chains to the low-carbon economy. Our world-class service of reliably connecting commodity suppliers with customers and our ability to trace our trade emissions on the CarbonChain platform means we can help make customers’ decarbonization goals a reality.”

Adam Hearne, the CEO of CarbonChain, said, “In the net-zero transition, every actor in the metals value chain has a role—every decision matters, from production to procurement. Fusina is proving that there is demand for low-carbon products in the manufacturing industry and that supply chain carbon reporting can be done accurately. We hope other industry leaders will follow this path amid new ISSB standards, the EU CBAM and Scope 3 reporting regulations.”
