Italy’s aluminium structures export to extend growth in 2019; Austria to be the main export destination

The use of aluminium in major construction structures started in 1930 within the Empire State Building, and today this light metal is recognised as one of the most energy-efficient and sustainable construction materials. The estimated recycled content of aluminium building materials used today is between 50 and 85 percent. Along with the use, the export-import of aluminium structures has also been found rising all across the globe.

For instance, Italy, where the export of aluminium structures has been increasing since the last four years, found the export-import data. In 2016, the European country exported 47,014 tonnes, while in 2017 72,111 tonnes. This represents a sweeping growth of 166 per cent in Italy’s aluminium structures export in 2017. In 2018, the country’s export continued to rise to 87,187 tonnes, up 21 per cent YoY. 2019 is also expected to be of no exception and record a growth of 3 per cent to 89,806 tonnes.

Austria is likely to be the major importer of Italy’s aluminium structures this year, by securing 10,575 tonnes, up 2 per cent from 10,359 tonnes in 2018. In 2016 and 2017, Italy’s export to Austria was at 6,847 tonnes and 10,197 tonnes respectively. This indicates year-on-year rises in Italy’s aluminium structures export to Austria since 2016.

In tandem with the rise in export volume, the value has also been increasing over the years. From US$299 million in 2016, Italy’s aluminium structures export value rose 38 per cent to US$414 million in 2017 and further in 2018 by 37 per cent YoY to US$569 million. This trend is likely to continue in 2019 as well, with the value amounting to US$590 million, up 3.69 per cent from the previous year.

Italy’s export value to Austria in 2017 grew year on year from US$22 million in 2016 to US$34 million but fell in 2018 to US$33 million, despite a rise in export volume. In 2019, the value is estimated to remain flat.
