In September, producers had to pay extra money to bring their goods to market, as output prices for the Mining and Quarrying business and the Manufacturing industry both increased by 0.3 percent. The Statistical Institute of Jamaica's newest producer pricing index statistics indicated the rise in production costs (STATIN).
{alcircleadd}Bauxite mining and alumina processing costs increased by 0.3 percent. It was also the primary cause of price increases in the Mining and Quarrying business. The second major group, Other Mining & Quarrying, had a 0.1 percent increase in its index.
Meanwhile, the key groupings Food, Beverages, and Tobacco, as well as Chemicals and Chemical Products, each climbed by 0.5 percent, and Refined Petroleum Products, which increased by 0.2 percent, were the biggest contributors to the growth in the Manufacturing industry.
The Mining & Quarrying industry increased by 15.7 percent from September 2020 to September 2021, owing mostly to a 16.2 percent increase in the index for the major group Bauxite Mining & Alumina Processing. The Manufacturing industry's point-to-point index increased by 15.8 percent.
The Mining & Quarrying industry index climbed by 4.5 percent in the fiscal year 2021/2022, from April 2021 to September 2021, while the Manufacturing industry index increased by 7.7 percent.
