Jamaica Bauxite Mining Limited (JBM) and the Agro-Investment Corporation (Agro-Invest) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to repurpose former bauxite mining lands for agricultural development in an initiative that will revolutionise Jamaica's agricultural sector.
{alcircleadd}This landmark agreement, executed on November 7, supports the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Mining's ongoing commitment to fostering sustainable agribusiness practices and strengthening climate resilience.
The MoU outlines plans for a significant agricultural transformation on 670 acres of JBM's former mining land in Lydford, St Ann. This site will serve as the foundation for an innovative, technology-driven agro-park designed to boost investment in the sector and advance modern farming practices.
The agro-park is designed as a model for sustainable agribusiness, incorporating climate-smart practices and providing leasing opportunities for investors, as well as small and medium-sized farmers, through the Rural Agricultural Development Authority (RADA). Currently, some of these lands are already being used by existing farmers under the Jamaica Bauxite Mining (JBM) initiative. The project's first phase aims to formalise these farmers' status, ensuring they receive the necessary support to boost their productivity. This regularisation process will lay the groundwork for a smooth transition into a forward-thinking agro-park.
Farmers in the agro-park will gain access to essential resources such as irrigation systems, cold storage facilities, vertical farming or greenhouse setups, and efficient transportation networks. These assets will empower them to produce high-quality crops, minimise post-harvest losses, and maintain a steady supply of fresh produce for domestic and international markets.
Agro-Invest will spearhead the design and operational framework, facilitate coordination with stakeholders, and provide technical expertise in areas such as agronomy, land management, and resource planning. Both organisations aim to draw investments to bolster infrastructure, streamline operations, and drive growth within Jamaica's agricultural sector, enhancing production efficiency, diversifying crops, and strengthening supply chains.
