Kolkata metro network awaits the integration of steel-encased aluminium third rail system

In a mission to imitate global green initiatives by metro networks, Kolkata Railways is about to introduce a steel-encased aluminium third rail system replacing the older pure-steel version. This will make the entire metro chain much more sustainable, reducing carbon emissions to a great extent.

International metro layouts in London, Moscow, Munich, Berlin, Istanbul and Singapore all have steel-encased aluminium rail systems, and Kolkata is keen on following its technological peers.

This high-end and innovative initiative is underway to offer a range of benefits, particularly by enhancing the frequency of trains during peak hours. This development will not only improve the efficiency of the Metro Railway but is also expected to result in a substantial annual reduction of INR 1 crore in power expenses. By embracing this contemporary approach, Kolkata Railways aims to offer commuters with better transportation options and take significant strides towards promoting sustainability.

Associated people have discretely asserted that the new steel-encased aluminium rail system will be incorporated within the prevailing infrastructure. The Uttar Pradesh Government is yet to review the technical paperwork for this phenomenal project. After the review process, the construction of this third rail system would flag off in Kolkata, with a two-year completion time.

The aluminium-encased third rail system will indefinitely reduce energy consumption by 84 per cent, which will help in saving almost INR 1 crore, giving Kolkata Metro a chance to rearrange its financial budget. Other than the economic front, switching to aluminium rails will be pretty beneficial for the environment, as the non-ferrous metal is 100% recyclable and can retain its original properties after rigorous transformational processes. This will help create a closed material loop that upholds a sustainable threshold.

Upgrading the Kolkata Metro's third rail system involves more than just replacing the rails. The third rail current collectors (TRCC) must also be upgraded to ensure the energy conservation goals of the initiative are fully realized. The advanced TRCC-equipped rakes of the East-West Metro will be instrumental in achieving these objectives.
