Lakeland Artisan adopts sustainability, introduces aluminium cans for soft drinks

Lakeland Artisan, run by husband-wife Geoff and Mary Monkman, is a well-acknowledged food and drinks company creating high-quality, handcrafted products using natural ingredients bereft of artificial preservatives. Under the company's lead, Mawson's Traditional soft drinks will now pack their sparkling soft drinks in 250ml lightweight aluminium cans to move towards sustainability.

Aluminium is an infinitely recyclable metal, with its scrap producing 95 per cent less carbon than any other of its alternatives, like plastic. In the journey towards sustainability, many important brands are moving towards using secondary aluminium since it uses substantially less energy than the production process of primary aluminium takes. Aluminium is also lightweight and corrosion free, which helps the liquid inside stay safe for an extended period.

Only natural ingredients are used in the new drinks, which come in recyclable aluminium cans measuring 250ml, creating a circular economy and reducing packaging costs.

The drinks' variations are available: Pink Lemonade, Ginger Beer, Classic Cola, Cream Soda, Fell Tonic Water, Dandelion & Burdock, Sarsaparilla and Elderflower & Rose.

Made Smarter Initiative was crucial to procuring new canning machinery by acute funding. The organisation also hopes to construct a digital innovation ecosystem with monetary support that enhances the workability of UK discoverers and producers. 

The proprietor, Geoff Monkman, elucidated: "Cans are the way forward, as a greener option, the aluminium can is made from recycled metal, and lighter weight so less carbon footprint."

"This latest investment in machinery for the business means that everything we make in our production unit is still canned, jarred, or bottled on-site," he added.

Products from the Lakeland Artisan brand and other developing items, linked with Mawson's, Herdwick Distillery, Lakeland Liqueurs and Cumbrian Delights, are solely dependent on a perfect amalgamation of traditional craft, formative research, responsible sustainability standards and customer review.
