LATAM Airlines Group has reportedly launched an on-board recycling scheme called ‘Recycle Your Journey’. Through this scheme, waste from Mercado LATAM will be recycled on all domestic flights in Chile, separating aluminium, glass, and plastic.
{alcircleadd}This initiative will soon be introduced throughout LATAM’s operation in Latin America, as part of the company’s wider sustainability strategy and its commitment to become a leader in on-board recycling.
Ignacio Cueto, President of LATAM Airlines Group said, “As one of the three most sustainable airline groups in the world, we are committed to bringing about change and leading by example. Today’s launch of our ‘Recycle your Journey’ programme on domestic flights in Chile represents just the first step towards the introduction of on-board recycling across our network.”
Cueto added this on-board recycling scheme would not be possible without the support and willingness of our passengers and commitment of cabin crew.
Between August and December, the airline expects to recycle more than 20 tonnes of waste from domestic flights in Chile and by the end of 2020, more than 55 tonnes per year.
The programme will be implemented in several stages, starting with Mercado LATAM service offering passengers the opportunity to buy food and drink on-board. Then the cabin crew will collect the waste, separating aluminium, glass, and plastic. Lastly, LATAM’s partner LSG Sky Chefs will collect the separated waste on arrival of the flight and transport it to local recycling centres.
Currently, aluminium, glass, and plastics of the packaging waste will be recycled.
