Aluminium recycling goes beyond sustainability; it serves as a key catalyst for economic growth, enhances supply chain resilience, and supports environmental responsibility. And talking about recycling, Novelis, the global leader in aluminium rolling and recycling, is leading the way in end-of-life vehicle recycling, going beyond just production scrap.

By utilising advanced scrap sortation and segregation technologies, the company aims to capture specific aluminium alloys from decommissioned vehicles, preserving their value and quality. In partnership with key industry players, Novelis is driving a circularity platform for end-of-life vehicles, optimising material flow, increasing access to high-quality recycled aluminium, and minimising landfill waste.
Collaborating closely with automakers
Understanding that recycling begins with thoughtful design, Novelis also collaborates closely with automakers to create sustainable solutions, such as uni-alloy designs for components like hoods and doors. This approach simplifies recycling processes and improves material recovery.
Very recently, Novelis' Uhrichsville plant reached a remarkable milestone, earning recognition as a Sustainability Lighthouse by the World Economic Forum's (WEF) Global Lighthouse Network (GLN). As the first aluminium manufacturer in the U.S. to achieve this honour, Novelis proudly joins a select group of industry pioneers driving transformative global sustainability practices.
"We believe we are the world's largest closed loop aluminium recycling partner, returning automotive makers' production scrap to our facilities to be melted down and reintroduced into the supply chain. This process not only reduces costs but also significantly lowers carbon emissions, aligning with the growing sustainability priorities of both automakers and consumers. Recycling aluminium uses approximately 95 per cent less energy than primary aluminium production, resulting in 95 per cent fewer carbon emissions," added Novelis.
Lightweight & sustainable
Aluminum lightweight nature is both practical and cost-effective. Advanced manufacturing methods, such as hot stamping and adhesive bonding, allow for significant weight reductions without major cost increases. For example, replacing steel components like doors and hoods with aluminium can cut weight by up to 50% at a competitive price.
Aluminium’s lower density—about 67 per cent less than steel—means less material is needed to maintain the same structural integrity. This reduction in material usage can offset the higher per-unit cost of aluminium compared to steel, resulting in overall savings. Furthermore, lighter vehicles can achieve secondary weight reductions. For instance, replacing 400 kg of steel with 240 kg of aluminium reduces primary weight by 160 kg, which can lead to an additional 40 kg to 60 kg reduction in components like brakes and suspension systems.
How Novelis uses customised solutions different automotive needs
Understanding that every vehicle has unique material needs, Novelis works closely with automakers to create customised aluminium solutions that align with specific performance, design, and sustainability goals. Our low-carbon alloys offer exceptional strength and versatility, fostering innovation across various applications—from electric vehicle (EV) platforms to high-performance SUVs. Even smaller vehicles benefit from lightweighting, as reducing weight improves fuel efficiency and lowers emissions.
For EVs, lightweight is essential to offset the substantial weight of battery packs, resulting in better range and enhanced performance. In commercial vehicles, aluminium lightweight provides even greater advantages by boosting fuel efficiency, increasing payload capacity, and helping fleets meet strict emissions standards. Furthermore, reducing vehicle weight with aluminium allows automakers to use smaller engines or fewer batteries, along with lighter suspensions and brake systems, leading to additional weight and cost savings.
"The shift to aluminium goes beyond just material supply; it requires collaboration and innovation. At Novelis, we partner closely with automakers, offering extensive support from early-stage design consultations to advanced R&D testing at our Customer Solution Centres worldwide. Together, we aim to redefine what's possible in automotive design and manufacturing," said the company.
