According to a HuffPost UK a number of major coffee capsule brands in UK have set up their green agenda to recycle the plastic and aluminium coffee capsules.
If not recycled, aluminium coffee pods reportedly take between 150 to 500 years to decompose. That is the reason the major coffee capsule brands in UK are creating awareness about recycling coffee capsules.
{alcircleadd}Plastic and aluminium, the two materials that the majority of coffee capsules are made from must be separated before recycling, and this needs special recycling plants and specialist recycling schemes. Leading capsule coffee company Nespresso told HuffPost UK that they facilitate recycling of about 21% of their pods, with the remainder going to landfill or being incinerated.
Nespresso allows its members to recycle their capsules by either returning them to Nespresso boutiques in London or by booking a home collection or sending them to Nespresso via CollectPlus or Doddle.
Recycling company Terracycle are in the process of starting a recycling scheme for Tassimo coffee pods only. Pods are collected by volunteers from 150 collection points around the UK and sent back to TerraCycle, raising money for charity in the process.
At Starbucks, one can collect a recycling bag from the local UK Starbucks branch and return the used capsules to be recycled. They allow any Nespresso-compatible capsules and not just Starbucks’ own brand. Leftover coffee grounds, which make up 95% of the weight of a used capsule, are recycled by Starbucks and the capsule is broken apart to separate the plastic casing and aluminium foil for recycling.
Nespresso has been continuously working g towards creating awareness about aluminium coffee pod recycling.
