Metlen Energy & Metals, a prominent global industrial and energy company operating across all five continents in the Energy and Metallurgy sectors, has announced that its flagship gallium production initiative at the historic Aluminium of Greece facility has been designated a Strategic Project by the European Commission under the Critical Raw Materials Act (CRMA).
Following an in-depth technical evaluation by independent experts, the European Critical Raw Materials Board recommended that METLEN’s investment be designated a Project of Strategic Importance for the Union. The board included representatives from all 27 EU Member States and members of the European Parliament.
This decision, confirmed on March 25, 2025, marks a major milestone for European metallurgy and Greek mining, significantly enhancing Europe’s strategic independence in critical raw materials, including bauxite, alumina (and aluminium), and gallium. Of the 170 projects submitted across Europe, only 47 from 13 Member States secured approval.
Melten’s comprehensive project — encompassing bauxite mining, an expanded alumina production facility, and the production of 50 metric tons of gallium — was selected, highlighting the critical role these materials play in strengthening Europe’s supply chain resilience. This strategic designation also paves the way for faster permitting, enhanced access to European funding, and greater institutional support from the EU.
With METLEN’s project now designated as strategic, the industry anticipates the revival of bauxite mining operations after decades of dormancy, an increase in alumina production — a sector that has faced significant challenges in Europe — and the complete replacement of gallium imports. These developments are essential for manufacturing key equipment and technologies in the energy, digital, and defense sectors.
In support of the project, METLEN is honoured to welcome Stéphane Séjourné, Executive Vice President of the European Commission, for an official visit to the Aluminium of Greece industrial facility on March 27, 2025, where the project’s contribution to European strategic autonomy will be highlighted.
