Mozal SA has joined Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI) as a new Production & Transformation member. This brings the total number of ASI Members working towards a responsible aluminium value chain to 141.
{alcircleadd}The company manufactures approximately 575,000 tons of primary aluminium per annum of which 9% is sold annually to a downstream business.
“Mozal joined ASI as part of our business strategy to improve transparency and deliver on international performance standards in the area of Environmental, Sustainability and Governance. We believe to produce a product in a responsible way and minimize impacts to environment, people & community and maintain our license to operate in Mozambique. ASI will help us improve our ESG performance and assist us to learn and incorporate world class performance standards,” Emile Muller, Manager Business Improvement.
South32 owns 47.1 per cent of Mozal Aluminium, while Mitsubishi Corporation Metals Holding GmbH holds 25 per cent, Industrial Development Corporation of South Africa Limited owns 24 per cent and the Government of the Republic of Mozambique holds 3.9 per cent (through preference shares).
