National Hero Phinergy imparts its aluminium-air technology providing electricity to Israel

EDITED BY : 3MINS READ

Phinergy's aluminium-air technology discovered its full potential in the wake of the Israel and Palestine conflict on October 7, this year. The electricity supply to the Israeli side of the Gaza border was disrupted due to constant intrusions, and it was when Phinergy tapped into their backup energy system installed at local telecom sites so that cellular communications could be bolstered for long periods of time.

Founder Aviv Tzidon: "Our system enabled subscribers of our cellular provider client to maintain continuous communications under the most difficult circumstances."

The terror attack on October 7 in the south of Israel caused severe disruptions in cellular communications in the Gaza border region, as the electricity grid collapsed in many places due to the fighting. The backup systems, designed for a few hours of service, were unable to keep up, and most cellular communication sites in the area experienced temporary electricity outages. This left mobile phone users in the region completely cut off at the start of the war, unable to communicate in the crucial hours.

However, the sites where Phinergy systems were installed continued to provide essential connectivity for tens of hours. Throughout the initial days of fighting, Phinergy's green energy systems, based on innovative aluminium-air technology, played a pivotal role in maintaining the operation of communications around Israel's Gaza border region.

Phinergy's chairman and founder, Aviv Tzidon, illustrated: "Our systems have already proven their effectiveness and resilience in day-to-day life, successfully backing up cellular infrastructures as needed from time to time. Now, the systems have also been proven to successfully provide tens of hours of continuous connectivity in emergency situations, enabling cell-phone service subscribers to stay in ongoing contact with their families and with rescue forces, even in the most difficult situations."

Phinergy is an innovative technology company that was founded in 2009 by Tzidon, a renowned entrepreneur and is currently managed by CEO David Mayer. They have developed groundbreaking technology that utilizes metal-air batteries to harness electric energy from aluminium and zinc. The company's aluminium-air systems have been designed to act as backup energy sources for critical infrastructure, such as hospitals, data centres, and telecom sites, and to provide electric power for electric vehicles.

One of Phinergy's major Israeli mobile operator customers has deployed the firm's backup systems at over 10% of their network's sites, including several hundred locations. During a war, some of the client's sites near the Gaza Strip were operating on Phinergy's backup systems, where they were put to the test and proved their efficiency and flexibility, according to Tzidon. Despite the lack of a continuous electricity supply, Phinergy's remote, intelligent management of their systems helped regulate the rate of electricity flow, allowing it to last much longer. This not only demonstrated the system's functionality but also the company's dedication to providing reliable and sustainable energy solutions that can withstand challenging situations.

The founder explained: "In practice, our system stores a lot of energy at the (cellular) site itself due to the aluminium components. By switching the system to savings mode, we were able to successfully reduce the load and extend the electricity supply by several tens of hours during the attack. This remote management capability is something that all Phinergy's employees are very proud of."
